In a heartwarming display of loyalty and love, Kyle Smith, a member of the U.S.
Air Force, remained steadfastly by his beloved dog Bodza’s side as the loyal German Shepherd reached the end of his life.
Their bond had been forged through years of shared experiences, and Smith couldn’t bear the thought of being anywhere else but beside his faithful companion during his final moments.
A Lifelong Partnership
Kyle Smith and Bodza had been through a lot together. Both serving in the U.S. Air Force, they had endured 189 challenging days on a security mission in Kyrgyzstan.
Over the years, Bodza, an 11-year-old German Shepherd, had dutifully served as an explosive detection dog, saving countless lives by detecting bombs during operations in Iraq, Kyrgyzstan, and Kuwait.
Although Smith began working with Bodza in 2012, their friendship blossomed rapidly and endured.
Smith cherished his time with Bodza, not only for the lessons the loyal dog taught him but also for the companionship they shared.
Reflecting on their relationship, Smith expressed, “I loved working with him because he taught me a lot – patience as a young handler, and how to understand that this job isn’t just about you.” Bodza’s dedication and selflessness left a lasting impact on Smith.
While their work was of utmost importance, Smith and Bodza also found joy in playful moments together.
Smith reminisced, “Bodza was a goofy and gentle dog. We had horse stables directly beside our obedience yard, and when the horses were out, no obedience was going to be done.
He’d run the fence line continuously.” Bodza’s penchant for barking at his own shadow became a source of amusement for Smith, who would often playfully tease him by imitating a shadow or pretending to be a rabbit.
The Retirement and Adoption
When Bodza’s retirement approached, Smith didn’t hesitate to offer him a loving home. “I took him home the same day,” Smith recalled.
Bodza’s loyalty only grew stronger outside of duty. He became Smith’s constant companion, faithfully following him everywhere.
Each night, Bodza would lay his head down beside Smith’s bed, bidding him good night. Their bond transcended the professional realm and deepened into an unbreakable friendship.
Battling Degenerative Myelopathy
In the summer of 2016, Bodza was diagnosed with degenerative myelopathy, an incurable disease that affects a dog’s spinal cord.
Smith witnessed the heartbreaking decline of Bodza’s health as his hind limbs lost their functionality, rendering him unable to stand or walk without assistance.
Smith empathetically noted, “He couldn’t handle the stress on his body, and using the restroom was a task.”
Acknowledging the challenges and the diminishing quality of Bodza’s life, Smith faced the heartbreaking decision of putting his beloved companion to rest.
With a heavy heart, Smith, accompanied by nine of his coworkers, took Bodza to the Fort Bliss Vet Clinic in El Paso, Texas.
They created a comfortable environment for Bodza, laying a soft blanket on the floor, ensuring his final moments would be filled with peace and love.
A Final Farewell
As Bodza’s life gently faded away, Smith cradled him in his arms, offering comfort until the very end.
Amidst overwhelming emotions, Smith shared, “It was a rush of so many things. It was just overwhelming.
” In a bittersweet revelation, Smith mentioned that despite the sadness surrounding Bodza’s passing, the loyal dog seemed to wear a smile, finding solace in the love and care he received.
Honoring Bodza’s Memory
Overwhelmed with grief, Smith found solace in the support of his coworkers, who allowed him to express his sorrow freely.
They stood by him, offering comforting words and gestures. Smith’s boss draped a flag over Bodza, giving him a final tribute.
Reflecting on the poignant moment, Smith remarked, “There was heartache and peace all at once that came over me.” Bodza’s memory would forever hold a special place in Smith’s heart.
Kyle Smith and his loyal companion, Bodza, shared an exceptional bond that went beyond the realms of duty.
Through countless challenges and joyous moments, their friendship grew, instilling valuable life lessons in Smith.
As Bodza’s health deteriorated, Smith faced the painful decision of letting go. However, his unwavering presence during Bodza’s final moments exemplified the depth of their connection.
Bodza’s memory will forever be cherished, reminding Smith of the immeasurable love and loyalty that a dog can offer.
